The blog has been quiet lately. Real life coaching has a way of doing that.
Yet, a few months ago, I sat down with the Garage Strength crew to talk boxing, strength work, conditioning, coaching, and the realities of working in the fight game. The podcast was recently posted online, so I figured I’d share it here as well.
A few stories. A few opinions. Probably a few things people will disagree with.
You can watch the full podcast below.
More to come when time allows.
Hey Ross great interview. I am currently running my fitness routine based off of never gymless as I am a busy dad with a fully time job in the military (18 years now). Never Gymless was an absolute game changer in the way I train and has gotten me in the best shape of my life. It allows me to stay at a high level of fitness wherever in the world I am at. Hopefully you leave it on your site for more years to come for others in my same situation.
I agree with Ryan’s comment above. Ross’s material got me in the best shape and made my boxing skills better than me on my own or local coaches could ever figure out ourselves using Ross’s old book, ‘The Boxer’s Guide To Performance’ which is worth its weight in gold IMO. I would be in the boxing gym and fighters from other cities and gyms would come to visit and train and spar and watch me hit the heavy bag and would be like, ‘Who is that guy? Is he a pro fighter?’ Etc. and man I could crack that heavy bag like a whip super violently and loud even with 16 oz sparring gloves on with my 6’3 HW frame but all the punching drills and plyometrics Ross taught me through his excellent authorship was why my punches were harder, faster, and more explosive than ever. I wish Ross would bring that book back or something for the combat sports community that’s about boxing skills and not just pure Strength and Conditioning content like ‘Infinite Intensity’ and ‘Never Gymless’ are (both of those are great books too, I like body weight like anyone else who grew up in combat sports but always felt like ‘Infinite Intensity’ was more for me in the S&C World because all the gym tools from medicine balls to dumbbells just add that extra edge to your training more than doing body work alone can provide IMO although the tools in the gym are relatively simple they are extremely effective, and remember to never forget the sledgehammer and old heavy tires swing method either if punching more visciously is a top priority for you as an athlete).
Great interview Ross, I really enjoyed it. I’m still using your books and materials for my training all these years later. it’d be nice to see more interviews like this in the future. All the best! ?

Hi Ross,
Glad to see a recent update- been a fan since 2003.
Would be great to see what nuances you have have learned since never gymless, particularly for young athletes, and whether long slow distance / zone 2 stuff is taken into more consideration for general health. I am very much an anaerobic athlete but am more focused on endurance as I get older.
Best regards
Luke
