Inspiration From James Spurgin

In 2006, James Spurgin was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him without the use of his right arm. After learning to live with one functioning arm, he eventually took up the sport of powerlifting. Now nicknamed The One Armed Bandit, James is putting up some tremendous numbers with just one arm.

Footage from a recent meet can be seen below. To label this story incredible would be an understatement.

Following his accident, I’m guessing that there wasn’t a person in the world who would have suggested for James to become a powerlifter. Fortunately, he made up his own mind and has been on a mission ever since. Odds are just odds, there is always a chance to beat them. James has done just that.

  1. The squat lift believe it or not seems like it would be the harder of the three, especially given the poundages James is squatting. Just to balance that kind of weight while only having one arm to steady the load behind your neck has got to be a major skill no doubt. I seriously think many legitimate 400-450lb bench pressers would have trouble trying to balance an olympic bar loaded to 170lbs for a pause style bench press like they do in powerlifting meets, without a significant amount of practicing at least before tackling it.

  2. I have never seen something like this before! I have personally trained a number of individuals with all kinds of issues and this is the best I have seen someone perform. Great inspiration to anyone who thinks their life has been changed by an event like this! awesome video!
