The Don’t Quit Poem

This entry is a continuation to a post from last week.

To begin, I’d like to share three quotes from Thomas Edison. The first is one that I’ve referenced many times. The reason I reference it so often is that I personally find inspiration in his words and wisdom…

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

I take Edison’s words to heart. As a man with over 1000 patents in his name, he’s not a bad person to emulate. Many of his quotes are printed on the walls of my gym. A quick glance to the wall serves as a nice reminder to keep on keeping on.

I didn’t always realize that my stubborn nature and refusal to give up or give in could be an attribute. When I was younger, my stubborn nature was often criticized. As I’ve grown older, I now realize that I wouldn’t have it any other way. If I believe in something, I’ll argue my point until you are tired of arguing. If I want something, I’ll keep busting my ass until I get it done. I don’t give up. I may get frustrated and come close to losing my mind, but I will keep on trying! It’s the only way I know how to live.

If you follow a similar approach to life, you’ll likely enjoy the video below.

Stay strong!

  2. Its funny that you found a video form of this, as I’ve had this poem as the background on my laptop for quite some time now.

    Nunca renuncie
    Geben Sie nie auf
    Ne jamais renoncer

It doesn’t matter how you say it be it Spanish,German,or French…Never give an inch and Never Give Up!

  3. Quitters never win, winners never quit. But those who never win and never quit are idiots.

See? What if you are like me, I don’t give up, I hang in there, but I just keep failing. What should a person like me do? Motivational quotes are fun and nice to read, but they will not put food on the table. Let’s face facts: not all of us can be winners. If there are no losers, there cannot be winners. Some of us are simply destined to remain failures for the rest of our lives so, in a way, the winners owe the losers something in return for their sacrifice.

Why doesn’t it work for me? Why do these motivational quotes and this “never give in” attitude only work for certain people? I put in the requisite effort, Im not stupid, I am a good person, yet I see the assholes, and the idiots keep getting over, keep getting what I want. Is there something I am missing here?

The truth hurts, and it hurts like hell. I keep trying, keep at it, but it only serves to make me look foolish.

  4. And just to add, this line is blatantly wrong:

“If there are no losers, there cannot be winners.”

Bernard Hopkins lost his first pro fight. Not everyone wins all the time, but you can win a hell of lot more than you lose (and yes, we all lose at some point).

In addition, you need to play the right game. I’ll never be a pro golfer. If you put me on the field, I’d come in last place. I’m also a terrible swimmer. Put me in the pool and I look like a fool doing the doggy paddle. You can’t be good at everything. You need to find what you are good at (and yes, we are all good at something).

  5. Damn, Harry what’s up man!!! It’s been a long time. I’ll definitely give you a ring when I’m down that way. I’ll likely shoot down this summer.
