 Post subject: Creating mp3 timer with Audacity: tutorial

I did it! The tutorial is a bit long, but trust me it won't take much time before you have your first timer for a workout!

(Audacity is a free code software, working on Linux and Window... I don't know about Mac. Just type "audacity sourceforge" on google!)

Remark

I don't say when to save your work... but do it! Use the Audacity format, don't export in wav or mp3 (I will tell you when).

Sometimes, it doesn't do what you want because you haven't selected the good track. For example it doesn't copy/paste the sound in the good track: you just have to select the proper track with the mouse!


Step #1: Creating the "bip" sounds

"work bip":
Project --> New Audio Track
Generate --> Tone --> I take "Sine"/440Hz/0.2sec
Generate --> Silence --> I take 0.2sec

Then I copy both tone and silence and pasted it twice. Then remove the last silence. I end with "tone/silence/tone/silence/tone" which lasts 1sec... So I hear "bip bip bip"!

"rest bip":
Same... but another sound!
Project --> New Audio Track
Generate --> Tone --> I take "Sine"/880Hz/1sec
So I hear a high "biiiiip".

(I keep the window opened to work in it...)


Step #2: Creating a track with the intervals pattern of the "bip" sounds

I choose a Tabata workout for my example. Since my "bip" sounds lasts 1sec, I need to do:

work: 1sec "work bip" + 19sec silence = 20sec
rest: 1sec "rest bip" + 9sec silence = 10sec

Project --> New Audio Track
Copy/Paste the "work bip" in the new audio track
Generate --> Silence --> I take 19sec
Copy/Paste the "rest bip" in the new audio track
Generate --> Silence --> I take 9sec


Now it's easy:
Copy what you've just done and paste it in the same audio track (at the end) 7 times.
Wow! You have now 8 "20sec work / 10 sec rest" intervals!

Let's say you want to do this intervals twice with 1 min rest:
Copy the 8 intervals you've just done
Generate --> Silence --> I take 50sec
(Yeah! You already have the 10sec rest from the intervals! Don't try to screw me with rest time!!!)
Paste the 8 intervals at the end of the silence...

Etc...


Step #3: Adding some music to it

Use this to import all the songs you want for the training with:
Project --> Import Audio

Then you just need to click at the beginning of each track and generate silence so that song #2 starts at the end of song #1, etc... Please don't waste time being precise, you'll train as hard if the track #2 starts 1sec before the track #1 ends!


Step #4: Final round!

Click on the "mute" button for the 2 first track ("work bip" and "rest bip") so they don't appear in the final track
Press the "|<<" button ("skip to start") then the "play" button to check your work.
If the "bip" sounds are to loud, if one song is too low comparing to the others... you have a volume control at the beginning of each track!
When you like the results:
File --> export as mp3 --> "tabata-2rounds-1minrest.mp3"
EDIT: the export in mp3 file won't take into account the "mute" button. You have to close the tracks instead (then you export and you can do "undo" or crtl+Z when the export is done)

Now go to training!


For next times (other intervals):

Open this audacity files
Close every tracks but the 2 first ones: you arrive at the end of Step #2 . Use the same logic to create other intervals!

Ah! I'm very proud you like it!

I now think it could be a could idea, each time someone make an Audacity file for a workout, to put it without the music on megaupload or something (maybe a Gmail account?).
So if we find a file for workout we need, we'll just have to download it, then add the music and correct the balance... and 5min later we go training!

I have always used audio instruction to guide my workouts.

I use Goldwave to make my work outs.

From the warm ups to the end. I make myself follow a count for various exercises and skill drills.

I find working this way to an exacting schedule makes me work hard and is a great way to measure your progress.

Lately I have used visual stimulus instead of audio. Helps with reaction timing.

However with things like heavy bag and a few other exercises I still use audio where I have to watch something else rather than a screen.

I was bought up having an intructor yell the count at me. So, I also do this for my own training. Works good.

I am a great believer in someone else making you work so I like to have that at home.

I got this idea back in the early 70's when I was doing Karate and I used to have a tape recorder in my bag and taped the lessons without the teacher knowing Hahaha. Then I would follow the lessons at home on my own.

I once taped a whole weekend Karate training camp except for the morning road work. Wish I had of kept them, they were brutal training sessions back in those days. Few schools train like that today. But I make my own training sessions as brutal as that will a short term goal to make them harder!

Pyramide intervals
(15,30,60,30,15 sec of work, with 15sec of rest each time)

Tabata's intervals

Minute Drills: 6x30sec

Minute Drills: 5x1min

Each time there is 1min at the end of the track, so with "repeat" on you can do several rounds with 1 min rest.
