Okay,

I train in SCA and battle re-enactment. I teach medieval combat in re-enactment and I fight with sword and shield in the SCA.

I am 6"2 and approx 16 stone at the age of 32.

Goals are tricky to determine but I want to be able to fight to my full capacity for the full duration of every tournament I enter.

End of the year my strength goals are:
5 ab wheel roll outs from my feet.
5 hand stand pressups.
5 pistols.
5 one handed pressups

Currently I can do 0 of the above. I am aiming to do at least 1 of each by the end of June. This gives me almost 5 months to train up to them.

I my conditioning goals are:
50 pressups without stopping
50 full burpees without stopping

My explosive strength goals are:
10 clap behind the head pressups.
A set up tuck jumps but I am not sure how many I can do already so I will have to work out my goals for that later.

I will try to test these every month or so.

Currently I will try to stick to the following program:

Monday - max strength
Tuesday - conditioning and skill work
Wednesday - endurance strength
Thursday - conditioning and skill work
Friday - explosive strength
Saturday + Sunday - mixed skill work

This week the schedule looks like:

Monday:

Dumbell clean and press 3x5 at approximately 25kgs
Dumbell rows - 3x5 at approximately 35kgs
Lunges with 40kgs dumbells.
Ab wheel roll outs - 3x5 from my knees.

Tuesday:

Skill training
Woodchoppers, as many as I can in 5 minutes

Wednesday:

3 sets of 15 pressups
3 sets of 20 body weight squats
Front plank
Side planks
Back bridge

Thursday:

50 burpees as fast as possible, no jump or pressup I am afraid (at least not yet).

Friday:

Sets of tuck jumps. Not sure how many I can do yet.
3 sets of 10 medicine ball throws (upwards)
3 sets of 10 medicine ball throws (across)

Monday 16th February

Dumbell clean and press 3x5 at approximately 25kgs
Did this but had to help my left hand with my right on the last 2 reps.

Dumbell rows - 3x5 at approximately 35kgs
Has to shed 5 kilos for the last set on my left arm.

Lunges with 40kgs dumbells.
This did not work out as I could not hold them properly

I will finish these off after choir practice as I do not want my core to be fatigued before I sing.

Ab wheel roll outs - 3x5 from my knees.
Pistols
Leg raises

Managed to get to SCA training. Fought with sword and board, sword and buckler and single sword against greatsword. Learned various things, the most important being that there was a gap in my guard at the same place there was a gap in my armour - AW!!!

A 'new' girl has started training with us. She is a knight but has not trained for about 20 years. The thought of what she could have done to me in a fight 20 years ago is a chilling one. Very fast, very powerful and has a habbit of being able to unwind a really powerful strike when instinct tells you that she cannot.

Wanted to do a quick conditioning workout when I got home but I had to tend to our baby.

Wanted to do a workout lunchtime but had a suprise meeting in work.
Did as much of a routine as I could before going to bed instead (once my wife was busy and our baby was asleep).

3 sets of 10 pressups supersetted with 3 sets up 20 bodyweight squats.
It is not as much as I wanted to do but it was better than nothing.

Not sure why but I found the first set of pressups REALLY hard - I could barely do 10! The other sets were not as bad.

Have a look at this for a demo about single combat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN-d_kgiI70

There is also group combat with up to a few thousand on each side.

There is also a range of medieval activities anyone can learn and take part in from caligraphy to armouring to dancing. It is a great way to beat someone over the head with a stick and than have a banquet, before dancing with some ladies and getting drunk.

Max strength day

DB clean and press
1x25kg
2 x 22.5kg

Not sure why but seemed weaker today than previously.

DB rows
2 x 35kg
1 x 30kg

Deadlift

Filled an army kit bag with chain maille vests. I think it was about 8 stone overall, about 75kgs. Now I have filled it and tried to carry it I am quite excited about all of the things it could be used to train but today it was just deadlift 3 x 5.

Tuesday 24th Feb

Went to SCA training. There were a couple of guys there including the British champion. I fought with sword and shield whilst most of them used greatsword. I was doing okay for a while but I had not eaten enough before the session (I am diabetic) so my stamina suffered as the session went on.

I was using the guard where the sword is horizontal over your head and the shiled is high. I had some success with this but every so often my sword forearm got tagged and it is now covered in buises. I have closed the gap on my left thigh but there seems to be a gap on my right shoulder (judging by the bruises there).

By the end of the session I was exhausted and in need of food!!

Wednesday 25th Feb

Farmers walk with my maille bag.

Picked it up onto my shoulder and then walked down the road and back. Change shoulders and repeat.

My back, side and shoulder ache like a mad thing.

Thursday 26th February

Re-enactment training

Trained 3 beginners, one of whom was an absolute raw beginnner. One of the others is out of practice and the other is up and coming and just needs an opponent to fight.

After those three I fought against one of the other trainers in a competitive fencing style fight, essentially it is sword and buckler but without the buckler (below the elbow is a non scoring area and it is legal to blow with it). We fought for a while and ended with a competition of first to 5. I managed to sneak a win at 5-4!

Monday 15th June

After doing some SCA skill training yesterday I got back to physical training today.

Have started a slightly modified version of the II 50 day plan. Basically it is the variant on p243 with an extra rest day. This means I will get each weekend off so I can attend battles - although I still sword train on Sunday so it is not really day off I suppose.

Anyway:

1 Hand Clean and Press.
Achieved a new person best using a 27kg dumbbell with my right hand.
Left PB is 25 kg.

I like this exercise but when I go heavt my thumb starts to hurt pretty bad (I broke it in a sword fight a few months ago).

So I changed out dumbbell snatches I was going to do lunges for my hamstrings but I decided to combine these with squats and do some zerker squats with my maille bag. These were pretty hard!

I have no where to do chins to I did dumbbell rows. 4x5 with 27kg dumbbell. Supersetted with sets of 15 pressups (I do not need a weight as my bodyweight is enough for me to struggle).

Finished with 50 med ball slams, I should have done 100 but I am a little worried about being too tired to train properly in tomorrow's skill session. If I am too tired and sore I will spend the evening having the shite kicked out of me!

Quick shower and now I feel good!
