 Post subject: Eating before bed?

Do any of you guys eat a light meal before bed or have a shake?

Im trying to avoid protein shakes and supplements now but was wondering if its really necessary to have something to eat before going to bed.

I know casein protein tends to be the drink of choice and I've heard of people having yogurt or cottage cheese, just wasnt sure if this necessary or something any of you guys have any input on.

At least two hours before bed time should be the cut off hour for eating. It's not a good habit and would result in fat gain overtime because of the decreased rate of digestion and liver activity during sleep.

Not completely true. It really boils down to his calorie intake for the day.

And C.G are you trying to gain muscle or something? Or just like to have something to eat before bed?

I tend to agree that it doesn't seem to matter to me what time I eat. Sometimes close to bedtime, sometimes not, I sweat overall daily calories more than timing. For people who do see a difference with meal timing, I wonder to what extent there are other factors than "proximity to bedtime" itself. For example, I find that if I eat closer to bedtime, my hunger gets my craving-ish -- I make worse choices, and eat more. Whereas if the last thing I eat is at 8, I find it very easy to make more healthy choices with more moderate calories.

Quick update to say, I dug around a little: the research seems to indicate that not only does eating right before bed NOT cause you to gain weight, but may be beneficial, for a number of reasons. A meta-study of studies of this topic came to this conclusion ... it's probably beneficial, and definitely not bad. The key is to make it a small snack, since total calories for the day counts, and late at night is when most people tend to binge.

I've always felt that this advice not to eat before bed is just repeated by rote, with no real evidence besides some theories around hormones etc which (as the metastudy above states) do not seem to hold water

Thanks for the input guys

I am looking to gain some lean mass and have been doing so but just want to make sure Im on point with the nutrition end. I usually just grab some almonds before I sleep (maybe 16 or so) but I try to keep any meals about two hours away from my bed time.
