Vermont's really got it right.

But even though the bill passed in the house, it has no chance in the senate.

Speaking of NY, hypothetically, since the city doesn't respect any other NY county or city permits unless "validated" by the NYPD, the bill would allow an out-of-state permit to be 'eligible' to be validated by the NYPD. Though I doubt that would be granted.

Note that the convoluted NYC laws required a rewrite of the bill.

You know, right-to-carry is fine, but there are way too many places where you have to have a permit to even have a long gun in the home.

You know, thinking about NYC got me off topic a bit:
in NYC there is some ridiculous blade restriction, which got me thinking about carrying a knife on airplanes (as I was missing my Spyderco Native on a recent trip), which then made me realize, that once again we got it wrong.

You want to stop some guys with boxcutters? Fill the plane with citizens with 4" folders, let alone guns.

No doubt. A good friend of mine was a chief Fed LEO in Alaska when they instituted constitutional carry. An already low violent crime rate went even a lot lower.

I too feel naked without my spyderco. The next time I fly I will pack my knife in my checked bag.

Be careful here in NYC, this place is as antigun as they come, unless you are a career street thug, they are armed. But Mr and Mrs average New Yorker who wants to get a pistol permit (as is your right under the constitution) never happening in this town.

Bad guys can be armed but heaven forbid the good folks are allowed to arm themselves.

Isn't this getting into politics? I thought we weren't supposed to do that.

You mean the legal ramifications of traveling with weapons? :P

Is it politics to say that I wish I were more free to protect myself as I travel? I just got back from various places in New England and I had to leave my gun at home since I do carefully follow the law.

I even visited Concord and Lexington while I was gone. The parks there are dedicated to the time in our history when the colonists finally reacted to the atrocities committed by a group of British regulars who were raiding both towns in order to confiscate both powder and guns from the regular population. The injustices that were being perpetrated at the time could not easily continue in the presence of an armed citizenry. It was then interesting to see the signs everywhere that banned the carrying of weapons in the parks dedicated to the time when those people refused to be disarmed.

Mea Culpa...I just discussed politics from 1775. :P
