I've been wondering about this for a while. I've read a few posts about how you are required to run 3 miles in 18 minutes to join the infantry etc. Does that really equal to 4.8km? I'm just asking because I dont think many people can go at 16km per hour for 4.8km (equivalent to 10miles/hour for 3miles; the speed required to finish in 18 minutes). I personally sure cant. I can barely go 5km in 23 minutes. Not saying I'm a great runner or anything, but I had thought I was good enough to join the military if I wanted. I'm sure many people can do it, but really, can ALL who join the military do it? So I just wanted to see how many here can do it.

Realize only Marines have a 3 mile run test. Army has 2 miles, Navy I dont know, Airforce I dont know. For the Army there is different age brackets and 13 minutes is the lowest time of all age brackets to get 100%. As a 28 year old my minimal run time (60%) is 17:00 give or take a few seconds.

I've done 1 mile in 6 minutes. I actually went a little bit beyond the mile before i died and went to heaven. I could probably do the 3/18 if I put my heart, soul, energy etc. into it. That, and I would have to quit drinking beer (don't see that happening anytime soon). So i guess i basically really have nothing to add here except that I'll give it a shot. Stay tuned.

I can do 1 mile in 6 minutes too if I tried (current best time is 6:20 for one mile, but thats while I was aiming for 2 miles, not for fastest 1 mile). But I'd have trouble keeping it up for 3 miles.

I used to be able to, but I let my cardio slip over the past year and so my heart would explode if I even attempted to hit 1 mile at that pace.

Ironically enough, thats the exact distance I do near where i live and the time I aim for. Usually I hit about 20 minutes but I have done it in under 18 on a few occassions. Was close to death afterwards though!

I dont run distances and the only time I ever tried to run over a mile I managed 2 miles in 12 minutes, this was a year ago for the body tranfsformaion challege. Id like to think id be ok to run 3 in 18 mins a year down the line, would be a good challenge, might give it a try and try to build up to it if I fail.

You Guys need to give yourselves much more credit. The Marine PT test requires an 18 min 3 mile run for a perfect score but not to pass, not sure what the minimum time is. When I joined the U.S.M.C. many moons ago I smoked 2 packs of cigs/day up until the day I got to boot camp. When I was in we only ran approx 3-4 days/week but one Instructor pushed me hard. On the final PT test I ran 3 miles in 18 min and 15 seconds. Sure it nearly killed me but I did it. And if a 2 pack a day smoker can do that with less than 3 months of training I know any of you can do it. Good god Have a little more Heart bitches

Damn mrallen that's pretty impressive though, I know how smoking can mess with your endurance. As for the poll.. I'm going to leave it open since I've never run a mile or more for time. Back in high school we did something similar but I can't remember the distance and time. Honestly I think 3 miles would destroy me, especially in 18 minutes! Much respect to those of you who can do it. (or once could)

I'm not built to run that fast but I would like to get there one day through hard work.
20 years ago I ran 5 miles a day.
My best time on a mile and a half was 9.5 minutes. But I am stocky as all fuck, built like a tank not a sprinter. Shit, at 8% body fat i weighed 185 at 5'10" ...
