Shadow Boxers Documentary – Lucia Rijker

The embedded player below contains a full documentary about former female professional boxer Lucia Rijker. I first heard of the documentary (Shadow Boxers) several years ago but it wasn’t until recently that I had a chance to watch it.

Most boxing fans will enjoy it as the movie shows many sides of a fighter that the average fan never sees. You will also see Lucia’s trainer Freddie Roach in action before he became the celebrity that he is today.

I never knew that Lucia was a kickboxer also. I remember watching a clip on Youtube where they measured the power of Lucia’s punch vs. some male boxer of the same size. It was from some show called Sports Science and the episode was titled “Hits Like A Girl.” Anyhow Lucia’s punching power proved to be greater than the male boxer, but I really don’t know if this was a “work” or a “shoot” as they say in the rasslin’ biz. I heard they’re going to make a movie about Roberto Duran sometime next year. Wonder who they are going to get to play Duran? Remember reading about how someone asked Joe Frazier who the bearded Duran reminded him of, and Joe said Charles Manson.

Just got through watching the documentary. Excellent insight on the life of a boxer. I’m always amazed at how deceiving the appearance is of REAL boxers. If you saw Freddie Roach, and had no idea of who he was, you would imagine him to be some nerdish like stamp or bug collector and not a former world class boxer. Lucia definitely carries herself well in and out of the ring. It’s refreshing to see a dominant athlete who is articulate and humble compared to the usual brash loudmouths that seem to permeate the sport’s world nowadays. She’s a class act and suprisingly more feminine than I would have imagined. I know this documentary had to be sort of dated when I saw James Toney with a slight trace of abdominal muscles, before he ate his way into the heavyweight division.

Found this gem on Youtube while trying to get a little motivation for that weekend workout. Youtube:Boxing Training Montage: Mayweather Tyson Pacquiao Hopkins Ali Joe Frazier Patterson Liston. Great training clips of all those fighters listed and others like Roy Jones, Marciano, Ray Robinson, Jack Johnson, and Ken Norton are also included. A great vid for any fan of boxing and a good inspirational clip for anyone interested in fitness or boxing.
