Cuban Amateur Boxing
Anyone familiar with amateur boxing knows that Cuba has been a powerhouse since winning their first medals in the 1968 Olympic Games. The small island of approximately 11 million people has long dominated amateur boxing throughout the world.
Those interested in learning the secrets to the success of this small, impoverished island may enjoy the videos below. A complete documentary has been split into five Youtube clips. Part 1 is embedded, with the remaining parts linked to at the bottom of this entry.

Thanks Ross, I was trying to find this
Ross, you will be happy to know I left a copy of Never Gymless with some Cuban boxers when I was there.
thank u, once more, ross! i watched all the five parts. great. viva cuba!!!!!
Poverty, hard living, and downright physical hunger will always produce the best fighters. I think it was Willie Pastrano who said something along the lines of “It’s hard to get up at dawn and do roadwork when you’re wearing silk pajamas.”
thanx for posting Ross. Que viva Cuba, siempre luchando por su vida!
Hi Ross
I am not a native english speaker, the word “impoverished” somewhat troubles me in the article. I associate it with hunger and malnutrition. Cuba might not be a highly indutrialised country but it has 0% child malnutrition according to Unicef.
If I misunderstood your article, I apologise.
James
It’s often used to describe poverty stricken areas.
