Dewey Bozella’s Fight For Justice

Below is a video that tells the story of Dewey Bozella. A related article can also be found here.  The video is just over 11 minutes long, but is well worth every second of your time.  I was glued to the screen.

Dewey Bozella served over 25 years in prison for a crime that he did not commit.  He was released in 2009 and now spends his time as a boxing trainer.  Recently, Dewey was honored at the ESPYs with the 2011 Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.

Dewey’s courage and perseverance are off the charts.  There isn’t any way to measure something so extraordinary.  I can’t even begin to imagine living over 25 years in prison for a crime that I did not commit. One part of the story that I could relate to however was when Dewey stated the following:

I owe boxing my life.  Boxing’s what saved me…

I’m fortunate to say that I’ve never had to deal with the hardship that Dewey’s encountered.  I can say though that boxing certainly had a lasting impact on me as well.  If I had never walked into the gym as a youngster, I have no idea how my life would have unfolded.  The sport changed my life forever in ways that I couldn’t even begin to describe.

It’s obvious that the sport also helped define the character of this remarkable man.  I would be honored to meet Dewey Bozella.

    This man is a saint.

Unfortunately, many wrongfully accused resort to depression, become filled with hatred and waste their lives.

Thanks a lot for sharing this.

    awesome story.

I don’t know what it is with the sport of boxing, but there so many inspiring stories like this. In fact there is an awesome book called “Life in the Ring” that goes over such incredible stories from the sport of boxing.

Bozella as a man is nothing short of amazing. To spend 30 years of your life incarcerated, to have more than one chance to go free if you just compromise your integrity, and finally to go free and not be bitter after having more than half of your life stolen from you. Man, im on the verge of tears here. Hats off to the detective for holding onto the case file as well. I wonder if he could’ve gotten in trouble for holding onto city property when he was no longer a city employee. Anyway, awesome, Ross, awesome. Makes my daily difficulties seem like nothing.

wow … that man is more than an inspiration. one can only hope to be half the man with even an ounce of the integrity and will power that he has. amazing

That case file….amazing that a detective held onto just that one file from a whole career. The ‘justice’ system in the USA has holes all in it. There’s a True Crime special about a 15 year old boy called Erik Jensen, who didnt commit any crime but got Life without Parole. Unbelievable. Back to Dewey, how amazing that he didnt lose hope in prison, and his integrity, by refusing to be free on the DA’s terms by confessing to the awful crime which he didnt commit. This man is a gem, and I’m sure he’ll get a lot of donations now that his story has gone global, to open a gym. Thanks for posting this Ross, your blog is the undisputed champion of blogs
