Inspiration From Ida Keeling

The next time you complain about age, take a moment to think about Ida Keeling.  She did not start running until age 67 and she’s still going strong at 95.

  1. I’m a pharmacist, and every single day I see people that are 20 or 30 years younger than her give up on any notion of being physically fit and active. I see 65 year olds who complain about walking from their cars in the parking lot to the pharmacy counter. However, here is a 96 year old woman who makes every effort to continue living like she always has. It’s inspirational.

I never want to grow old. Obviously, we all will eventually, but I will fight it at every step of the way. No one is ever going to tell me I can’t do something for myself. No one is ever going to tell me I should stop shooting hoops, doing pull-ups, or running. The day you stop doing the things you always have is the day you will no longer be able to do them.

If Ida had decided that her twilight years were a time to quit being active and sit in a rocking chair, she wouldn’t be alive and kicking today. Her decision to continually challenge her body is what allows her to remain healthy.

By the way… it also shows how much exercise keeps the mind sharp. How many 96 year olds are as mentally sound as Ida? Not many in my experience.

  2. Wow, I am inspired. I love to see stories like this, something to make us think differently about our age. I can relate with what Pharmacy Mike had to say about people complaining about working out or their health. We see and hear people talk this way every day. This is just self defeat at the least.

I am definitely going to work a little harder on my workout today and will not even think about age as an excuse to give up on fitness.

  3. That is truly inspirational. I was doubting myself; I have exercised off and on most of my life but then always stopped; I am currently taking Boxing classes and was doubting myself due to being 53 years old. But not anymore
