The Sydney Gym in Brazzaville
The video below highlights a small gym tucked away in the poverty stricken city of Brazzaville. Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo (a state in central Africa).
Within the video, you’ll see a gym that takes low-tech training to another level. All of the equipment appears to be homemade. I’m also guessing that this gym does not sell protein powder or any other supplements. Yet despite the obvious lack of funding, the Sydney Gym is filled with several well trained individuals who have clearly excelled in their environment.
If there was ever a case to be made for low-tech training, this gym has to be at the top of the list. It offers a welcome slap in the face to much of the money hungry fitness industry.

Nice, as long as everything is safe, i’ll take hard work over fancy flashy gym equipment any day.
man, i feel disgraced for paying for my gym membership, CONGO FOR LIFE/
I COMMEND THESE MEN
Great video. It really captures the feel of what training is all about–and how fitness need not and should not cost much money. The fitness industry in too many ways encapsulates the sleaze and avarice that makes a lot of well intentioned people turn away from fitness, serious fitness, all together.
Excellent video, loved how their pullbar was just a metal pole tied to a tree, simple but effective.
Great video Ross, it’s amazing to see this much DIY Equipment being put to such good use. I am pretty sure some of these guys are in better shape and possibly even stronger then most regular guys in commercial gyms.
are those small transmissions they are using for dumbbells? That is very clever
But how are you going to make any money off these guys? They’re even lifting in flip-flops
Nike needs a massive marketing campaign there to convince them they can’t make any progress without new shoes and maybe some Eleiko bars and plates.
Very cool!
Hi,
I’m from Congo-Brazzaville and the last thing I expected is videos of training from my country popping on the net lol…
I am a basketball player and as far as I remember that minimalistic physical training has always been done like that in my country.Weights made of train axles and mostly trains or heavy trucks parts. We used to squat with those kinds of weight as youngsters but we always feared the physical abilities of people from Brazzaville. Those guys jumped out of the gym and trained very hard, I remember hearing a story about a short 5’7 guy who could kiss the rim, he would do hill sprints, push tractor tires full of sand and do ab work till he cramped each session. When he could not do anything, his brother woul put him in a wheelbarrow a carry him home cause he couldn’t walk by himself.lol.
Good training to everyone…peace.
^^great story there “A”
thank you for this video. it is a nice reminder that fancy expensive equipment is not always needed to excel. I respect these people who find creative ways to train. That shows strong will and motivation.
Thanks
This video gives meaning to the saying “necessity is the mother of invention”. Half of what they are using for equipment would have never have occurred to me.
I would love to go to a gym like that!
Never gymless.. nice..
This video rocks! Never Gymless!!
That was just sick….Great way to recycle those truck parts!
I liked this video.
Except for the part where I lost my excuses. I didn’t like that part very much.
Back to it…
