New Video – RossTraining.com Compilation II

It has been a few years since I put together the original video compilation for the site.  Fortunately, I’ve finally got around to creating another.  It can be seen below.

The footage for this video has been collected over the past few years.  These clips offer a very small sampling of how we train.  I hope you can find some ideas within.  Additional videos can be found at my Youtube channel.

The Sydney Gym in Brazzaville

The video below highlights a small gym tucked away in the poverty stricken city of Brazzaville.  Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo (a state in central Africa).

Within the video, you’ll see a gym that takes low-tech training to another level.  All of the equipment appears to be homemade.  I’m also guessing that this gym does not sell protein powder or any other supplements.  Yet despite the obvious lack of funding, the Sydney Gym is filled with several well trained individuals who have clearly excelled in their environment.

If there was ever a case to be made for low-tech training, this gym has to be at the top of the list.  It offers a welcome slap in the face to much of the money hungry fitness industry.

Homemade Prowler Sled

Homemade push sleds have been discussed on this blog before (see here).  Below is yet another option for those interested in an inexpensive DIY sled.

The two videos below come from the same individual.  Within the first video, he explains how the sled was built.  The lighting is quite dark however, so the sled is difficult to see.  The second video provides a clear image of the sled.

Punchers and an Old School Analysis – Part III

(Please refer to Part I and Part II as well)

Following the popularity of the recent boxing videos, I’ve added two more below.  First, you’ll find the third of a three part series that has highlighted dominant punchers from the past.  This video focuses on the explosive welterweight class.  Heavyweights and middleweights can be found above in Part I and II.

Next, you’ll find yet another analysis of an all time great.  Joe Louis is the subject of this video.  It’s well worth a look for those interested in the complexities of the sweet science.

Punchers and an Old School Analysis – Part II

(Please refer to Part I as well)

Below are two entertaining videos.  The first highlights some of the greatest punchers in the history of middleweight boxing.  It’s one of the best compilations I’ve come across.

Next, you’ll find an interesting analysis of an all time great, Ezzard Charles.  It’s well worth a look for those interested in the complexities of the sweet science.

Standing Rollouts With A Ramp

(March 2011 – An updated ramp tutorial is available here)

Standing rollouts with an abdominal wheel have been discussed on this blog before.  Several progressions have also been demonstrated.  One such progression involved the use of a ramp.  Rollouts with an elevated ramp reduce difficulty of the exercise.

It’s been a few years since I first demonstrated a ramp rollout (seen within this video).  One limitation of the ramp seen in that old video was the inability to adjust its height.  Several readers expressed interest in elevating the ramp higher to reduce difficulty (initially). Fortunately, it is quite easy to build an inexpensive ramp that can be easily adjusted.

The Specifics

The ramp below was built from 2×4′s.  There are six 2×4′s across.  I’ve also added carpet to the ramp so it can be used with the furniture glide pads that were demonstrated before (see here).  The glide pads do not slide on the rubber matted floor.  The carpet ramp allows me to use these gliders inside the gym for a variety of exercises.

+++++

The ramp’s height is easily adjusted.  I have 2×4′s secured to the wall at various heights.  The ramp rests easily atop.  I then place a dumbbell at the end of the ramp to prevent any accidental sliding.

+++++

The ramp stores easily against the wall.  It doesn’t take up any room in the gym when not in use.

+++++

A video demonstration of the ramp can be seen below.

Additional wheel progressions can be seen here (partial rollouts and ramp rollouts), here (with lashing straps), and here (barbell rollouts with bands).

Another DIY Suspension Trainer

Homemade suspension trainers have been discussed on this blog several times before (Part I, Part II, More Exercises, Origin).

Below are images to yet another variation.  These images were posted to my Facebook page by one of the readers.

+++++

The Specifics

To begin, you can see how the device is anchored overhead.  Webbing is used, along with two carabiners

+++++

Next, you can see how nylon webbing is attached to cam buckles to allow for quick length adjustments.  Steel cable is then looped and secured to form the bottom portion of the suspension trainer.

+++++

Handles were created with 1 inch PVC pipe.  Foot cradles run through the pipe (made from nylon webbing).

+++++

The handles are both comfortable and strong.

+++++

As you can see, this suspension trainer looks similar to those that have been discussed previously, but the parts are actually entirely unique.  These pictures came from a trainer in Mexico.  Clearly, the availability of certain parts may vary in different areas of the world so it is useful to see different options.  Even rope could be used (see here for an example).

Mike Tyson Tribute (Gorilla Productions)

The Gorilla Productions Youtube channel was resurrected a few months ago.  Since its return, they’ve added several of their old videos back to the web.  Most recently, the Mike Tyson tribute was restored.  It was previously posted here, but was later removed from Youtube.  It’s now back and can be seen below.

Gorilla Productions puts out the best boxing videos on the web.  I don’t know who they are, but I speak for many when I say that I thoroughly enjoy their work.
