great post Ross. I like what you write. I read it and think i wish i could have said that.
I remember reading on your site a while ago "Conventional Wisdom is No Wisdom at All. " I liked that and have used it many times since then when people say i should not be doing the things that I am doing. In reference to my workout or races i sign up for..
    thanks Again

Great article! I managed to lose 50+ pounds myself and carve out my own exercise regime by simply researching online, trying what worked for me and adding what suggested itself. It's been 2+ years and I'm still going strong.

Yup - thinking for ourselves...

Now the irony of what I am gonna write next is that I will actually quote SOMEONE ELSE to reinforce that we should think for OURSELVES lol!

So there:

"Absorb what is useful, Discard what is not, Add what is uniquely your own"

It is attributed to the late Bruce Lee. In actuality Bruce was probably inspired to coin it by Krishnamurti (Deepak Chopra's teacher). Which is exactly the quote put in action! Awesome.

"Crime isn't the only danger; there is also isolation. If people can segregate themselves in ever-increasingly specialized groups, then they're less likely to be exposed to alternative ideas. We see a mild form of this in the current political trend of rival political parties having their own news sources, their own narratives, and their own facts. Increased radicalization is another danger lurking below the Coasean floor."
Amazon Reviewer commenting on Clay Shirky's book 'Here comes everybody'

The dependencies you speak of that are invoked by some members of the fitness industry, I think, border on cult like behaviour.

Amen Ross. Not only that, but some things you just can't coach, no matter how hard you try. They have to be learned by being in the midst of the work itself.
