40+
I received an email this morning from an individual who described himself as “an older man” and then informed me that he was only 39 years old. It is sad that someone in this age group would consider himself over the hill. My first boxing coach bought a new head gear when he was 75 years old. He was still moving around inside the ring with the young novices. He still exercises every day, and looks like a man in his 60’s at most. This all falls back to the simple advice…
Use it or lose it! And if you don’t believe me, perhaps Randy can convince you. This young man is only in his 40’s.
Enjoy,
Ross

Ross, Age is just a number, but you got to be gentle with us old farts when we get started. Years of little lies to ourselves need to be resolved. I said that myself 2 years ago, and this morning I ran a quarter of a mile up a hill side with an old 80lbs heavy bag on my shoulder. Not bad for an “old” man.
Wow! I am 38 and feel like I am 18. Hard to believe someone would consider themselves old at 39.
Doesn’t seem old at all. My Dad is 46 in still compete in hockey against people in their 20s.
The only advice I ever took from my father:
“Don’t stop doing things because you get older - You get older because you stop doing things”
Thanks, I needed that.
I would never trade being 37 for 17, but some days the 37 feels ancient rather than old & wise.
Good advice. I’m about to turn 49 and am likely in the best shape of my life! My mentor is a guy in Vancouver, Canada who competes in the Senior Olympics and brings back medals every time. He will turn 89 this year, and still swims, skiis, and even water skiis. He was teaching traditional Greek folkdance too; just retired last year at the ripe age of 88. His ’secret’ is having a keen interest in something in his retirement, something that kept him active and moving. Many people retire and have no idea what to do. And as posted above, they simply stop doing things.
Morning,
Age is only a number! I’m 43 and in the best shape of my life - got Ross’ bodyweight book 5 years ago or so and still use it today. I started P90x on 12/31/08 and am on Day 24, and also participate regularly in karate, kendo and other great activities.
You’re only as old or young as your spirit is light.
Best wishes,
Barbara
I get people who are 31 and 32 who complain they are over the hill and too old to do stuff. It’s actually kind of pathetic.
I started training in my early twenties and went to the gym with two friends whilst another friend of mine took up marathon running. As well as that, we played a number of sports such as soccer, basketball and did martial arts etc. Eventually my friends all stopped but I continued. Now I’m coming up for 43 next month and I continue to train. My main pastimes include ju jitsu, boxing, running, biking, weight training and in in the summer, wakeboarding, monoski and occasionally surfing and bodyboarding. I do these things with my wife and we do them for fun, not exercise. My three friends unfortunately have all gained a huge amount of weight and do very little. They seem like old men and it’s such a shame because they were so full of life at one time. As a postscipt my wife and I have recently taken up another past time, tango dancing. It’s amazing how you can still find new places to be muscle sore after twenty years ;o)
I got shivers done my spine. Several times. Watching that. I’m only 25 and often feel I’m to late do be good at any kind of sport. To late to be great in the ring and octagon. This made me think differently!! Thanks!
I trained with a karate man named Advincula when he was 68. The guy had a six pack. At the time I was at my heaviest weight from a bodybuilding approach to training and this guy was almost as lean as me. He was about 3 times as fast and could toss me around like nobody’s business. I was 20 years old was very strong and trained on the heavy bag and with opponents all the time.
Also, my grandfather once beat up a van full of hippies while in his 40s.
No-one better call me old at 39!!!
Still kicking the youngsters arses in the gym and on the rugby pitch!
“Youth & talent are no match for age & treachery”
Best regards to all.
In training
Vanders’
man that trampoline looks fun. might just have to find one of those and do some work.
