What is also impressive about Bannister's record is that he did it while he was a full-time medical student. He had no one paying him, no endorsement contract, not even a school doing him any favors (i.e., like an NCAA athlete). He worked in training sessions on his lunch breaks. He was a true student-athlete of the highest caliber.

Great video Ross! As Seth Godin says, once the record was broken, the top was off the jar and lots of people began jumping out. Once they realized it could be done, their minds let them do it. I think an even more impressive feat is the marathon runners that average 4.5 minutes/mile for 26.2 miles. I can't even do that for ONE mile.

Don't let anyone hold you back! When they ask why you attempt the impossible, the response is "Why not."

Track is a sport filled with "impossible dreams." Everyone tells certain athletes that because of their height, weight, speed, etc...they cannot achieve their goals. This dampens the mental aspect of training which in my mind makes track and field one of the toughest sports, mentally, that there is. Distance runners, especially are mental beasts and I have found that most of the best distance runners may seem to be "not all there." Haha, anyway good video for me especially since I am currently in a track training group in Canada.
