Fad Diets
In past blog entries, I’ve mentioned that nutrition is very simple subject, which shouldn’t be complex and confusing (ex. eat real food such as fruits, veggies, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, etc.). Unfortunately, a new fad diet pops up almost daily promising the new secret to fat loss and longevity.
The existence of such fad diets should not come as a surprise, but you may be surprised to learn that such diets have been around for many years.
Take a look back to this page from the Mighty Apollon:

And to those unfamiliar with the Sandow site, I highly recommend bookmarking the link below:
The amount of information contained within this site is simply incredible. As you read through the archives, you’ll quickly learn that several modern breakthroughs (so-called) have actually been around for many, many years.

Thank You Shaq!
Shaquille O’Neal is making a difference! While many harp on the topic of childhood obesity, very few are at the ground level actually making a difference. It’s one thing to complain about a problem, and another to actually do something about the problem.
It’s nice to see a big name such as Shaq getting involved.
Let’s hope that parents around the world are watching this show. I’ve never seen a 10 year old go grocery shopping on his own. His or her parents are buying and supplying the junk food that leads to obesity.
Clean up your refrigerator and turn off the video games! It’s summer! Get outside and do something with your kids.

Pickpocket Learns a Lesson!

A pickpocket learned a tough lesson when trying to take advantage of Bill Barnes of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Former-Marine, 72, Teaches Pickpocket a Lesson
This former boxer and Marine wasn’t going to let some young punk steal his cash. Barnes took matters into his own hands.
In a world filled with dreadful news, it’s always nice to see the good guys come out on top every now and then.

You won’t find a more “unique” name than this baby girl, whose parents may have taken their love for boxing a tad too far…

I love the sport too, but we all need to draw the line, right?

Great Interview
Check out this Randy Couture interview. I thoroughly enjoyed his discussion of boxing and MMA. As we’ve mentioned before, both sports are incredible, and can (and should) coexist.

Children Using Doping Drugs!
A new study suggests that more and more children are turning to performance enhancement drugs! I am completely disgusted at this news (although not surprised).
Study: 11-Year-Old Athletes Using Doping Drugs
As stated within:
In the beginning of the study, researchers found 1.2 percent of the preteens had taken a doping agent at least once in the previous six months. That number jumped to 3 percent four years later.
And while 15 percent of the 11-year-olds polled were using doping agents once a week, that figure more than doubles to 38 percent amongst the 15-year-olds.
******
This news is sickening. There are no 11 year old athletes who are getting these drugs without assistance! Unfortunately, this assistance is often coming from a parent. Anyone who allows, supports, and/or provides an 11 year old with an illegal drug is a disgusting criminal.
Perhaps these parents are living their dreams through a child? Perhaps they weren’t good enough, so now they want to build their children up through illegal drugs? What the hell is wrong with our world? How can a parent risk the safety of a young child for the sake of winning a youth title? Remember, we are talking about 11 year olds! When I was 11, I was playing Little League baseball. You don’t get paid to play Little League! Is it really worth the potential health risks?
These parents should instead show their kids information such as the following:
11 Reasons Why Steroids Don’t Work
This list is also discussed in the Bigger Faster Stronger text (discussed previously on this blog).
******
And to those youngsters reading this blog, I’ve never taken ANY performance enhancement drugs. NEVER! You don’t need drugs to perform. The great athletes from yesteryear didn’t need drugs! Sugar Ray Robinson didn’t need drugs to become the greatest fighter of all time! Drugs won’t teach you how to throw a left hook!
Don’t let a coulda-woulda-shoulda been coach convince you to take illegal drugs. If you put in the work (ie. bust your ass), work with a well designed program, make time for recovery/restoration, etc… you can go as far as you want.

3 commentsWeight-loss pills fly off the shelves in New York
It looks like pill makers will make a killing off the new non-prescription weight loss pill Alli.
As stated within:
A pharmacist at Windsor Pharmacy in Midtown Manhattan, Maha Omar, said the store initially bought 10 boxes of Alli, but reordered about two dozen more on Saturday after initial demand was strong. The store has sold about 20 boxes, each of which includes a month’s supply.
******
Now, we can all criticize the pill manufacturer for misleading the consumer to believe that these pills are the silver bullet, but can you blame them? These pill manufacturers are simply supplying the market with a product that is demanded by the consumer. Our society is lazy. Pill popping is here to stay. No one wants to work for anything.
******
This story reminds me of a trip to Walmart that I made last year. I needed to pick up a few 45 pound plates. I head to the exercise section and it looks like a ghost town. The free weights are covered in dust. I grab 4 x 45 pound plates and load up the shopping cart. I then head to checkout at the other end of the store. On my way, I pass by the vitamin and diet pill section. There are FOUR obese women all huddled around the diet pills. Each woman is trying to squeeze her way in to grab one of the last bottles. I wish I had a camera. These women are literally bumping in and off of each other, all trying to get their hands on a bottle of diet pills.
Meanwhile, the exercise equipment at the other side of the store is deserted. All you’ll see in that department is a thin coat of dust.
My trip to Walmart told me a lot about our world today. It’s a damn shame.

In his prime, Mike Tyson was the man to beat. His power and speed were incredible. But what many don’t realize is that his work ethic as a young fighter was also incredible.
